Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the role. She was not allowed to perform with her parents till she reached adulthood, as they feared the strain it might result in. Perry claimed she felt nervous to be an actor in high school but began acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer from Boston University. Perry made her debut in New York after graduation, landing minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California to work as a theater actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom in 2013 on Broadway in 2013. The show featured the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on the ABC Political thriller Scandal starring her father. The same year, she portrayed a child model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother as a young version. She got the part through an open audition despite being a fan of this character.
